From Mainframe to AI: The History and Significance of the Operating System for Artificial Intelligence

Thursday October 23, 2025 15:45 - 16:15 CEST Workshop Box 1

Lecturer: Tristan Post

Category: Workshop

In the 1960s, mainframe computers dominated—huge, expensive, and accessible to only a few. In the 1970s and 80s, the personal computer emerged, turning what was once a purely technical decision into a strategic business choice: Which system, what setup, what training?

Today, we are once again at such a turning point—with the shift from classical to generative AI.

In this talk, you will learn why AI is not just another tool, why choosing the right "operating system" for artificial intelligence must be a carefully considered decision—both strategically and in terms of regulation—and why digital sovereignty plays a crucial role in this context.

We will explore how this complex decision can be broken down in a way that is practically applicable in any organization—and what concrete steps need to be taken.

Because: we’ve been here before. Today, nearly everyone uses a computer.

Perhaps the leap into the AI era is easier than you think.
